The years 1770-1795, the last decades before the last partition of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, when the disintegration of the state coincides with the cultural progress of the Enlightenment. Franciszek Ksawery Narwoysz, the nephew of Piotr Antoni, the grandson of Jan Izydor and the great-grandson of Kazimierz, is a Jesuit, a professor of Philosophy and Mathematics, a freemason and a citizen of the world. The route of his life leads through Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk and Olomouc to the Western Europe – Amsterdam, Paris and, notably, London, where he spends 5 years. A priest not of his own will, he experiences not just the forbidden love, but also tries to establish his relationship with the faith and the world which is at the breaking point, where the concepts of human rights (including those of women and children) and Enlightenment are being born, as well as the fanaticism, terror and the imperial oppression.
