The years1707-1710, the Great Northern War during which Vilnius and Samogitia is being plundered by Swedes and the Russian company is being stationed in Biržai fortress, where the garrisson is comanded by a son of Kazimierz, cavalry captain Jan Izydor. His wife Anna Katarzyna is being sent to Milkonty manor, further from the theater of war. Unfortunately, the manor is being chosen as a retreat to spend the winter by a deserted company of Swedes, led by an officer, Ture Tibelius Magnusson, who takes both the manor and its lady. In Vilnius, under supervision of a Jewish doctor Aaron Gordon, the ageing and ailing Urszula Narwoysz-Biront is living in a splendorous townhouse, but amongst the ruins of her family life, a pandemic of plague erupts. It will take lifes of two thirds of the country's population. The continuation of Narwoysz family line is endangered – and probably could be saved only by an accident. Spinoza's theory of predestination, the accident and the fate are the leitmotifs of the novel, which at the end reveals also the tragic secrets of the previous generation.
