Danutė Kalinauskaitė (b. 1959) is a master of short stories. She has written three books, the second of which, “You Never Know”, was awarded the prizes of Lithuanian Writers’ Union and the Lithuanian Literature and Folklore Institute. “The Draughty House” (2015) is her latest book of short stories in which she returns to describing everyday situations revealing their latent existential depth. A simple household reality, opening its magical dimension, becomes a key to the fate of the people. From the smallest detail, the writer reconstructs the lives of people, thus becoming a sort of “internal human archaeologist”. Each novella represents a look into the depths of human life. Danutė Kalinauskaitė’s books distinguish by their expressive, very rich language, abundance of details and attention to them as well as a very deep knowledge of human psychology.
